Vineyards Abound

The Swan River Sanctuary is located in the heart of Tasmania’s East Coast and is neighbour to a number of acclaimed vineyards in the area. Cool climate pinot noir, syrah, pinot gris and sparkling chardonnays are the varieties the region is best known. Cellar doors including; Gala, Mayfield, Springvale, Milton and Devils Corner all close by, perfect for lunch or a wine flight.

Surrounding Towns

The closest town, about 8kms away, is Swansea. An historical seaside village settled in 1821, its streets loaded with stone cottages in early colonial Georgian style. We recommend Milk and Honey for great coffee and home-baked goods, Alimento for your larder and charcuterie needs and restaurants including The Bank or The Waterloo.

OYSTERS and BEACHES

For those that love Oysters there are two oyster farms in the area, the closest being Mellshell, their oysters are grown in the Swan River and fattened in Great Oyster Bay.

Coles Bay and the famous Wineglass Bay inside the Freycinet National Park are the iconic destinations on Tasmania’s East Coast and are easy driving distance, making a brilliant morning or afternoon outing from The Swan River Sanctuary. The walks in the National Park or on the pristine ocean beaches (we recommend Friendlies Beach) are an absolute must when in the region.

About 30kms to the North is the town of Bicheno, a bustling beach side place for bronzed surfers and flowing dresses. A great place for local fish and chips at the Lobster Shack, their fresh crayfish roll a specialty or a visit to the Waubs Bay whisky distillery.

Testimonial

“A beautiful lodge in a tranquil & stunning location. The house is comfortable and can accommodate groups. We went as a couple & loved the space. We particularly enjoyed waking up to the view from the upstairs bedroom. Surrounded by the rolling hills of Tasmania. Activities on the water included swimming, fishing & kayaking. The house is situated close to beaches, local shops and cafes and you can drive to Freycinet National Park. The host is helpful, responsive & friendly. We would love to return & highly recommend Swan River Sanctuary.”
